Extinction Rebellion 21 September 2023

· XR activist Angelo Doyle was grabbed and choked by Colonel Mere from public order police. He's was then held in Standard Bank for over 4 hours. He has been transferred to Rosebank police station and will be held overnight. This is unfair and disproportionate!

For an unlawful arrest of an activist from Extinction Rebellion Gauteng. This followed a 3 day long occupation of Standard Bank’s offices in Rosebank. We were demanding to debate with Kenny Fihla and Sim Tshabalala on their banks fossil fuel financing and lack of attention for poor communities. On the third day, we still had no response and started demanding for an engagement.

When demanding this, standard banks private security used excessive force on activists including punching, kicking choking and scratching. After two promises made by public order police who were in contact with standard bank management, there was still no response after 2 hours of delay and all orders obeyed by extinction rebellion activists.

As activitst were beginning to take down tents and remove all stuff as ordered by police, police began dismantling and roughly throwing around possessions. During this, one activist Angelo Doyle from Eldorado Park was grabbed and put in a chokehold by Colonel Mere from public order police. He was taken into the standard bank building and has been kept there for over 4 hours now.

Lawyers from right to protest are shocked and don’t believe the police have any grounds to charge Angelo. It is also highly irregular and extremely unfair and disproportionate treatment.
